Religion: Do what you need to do

I was thinking about the many disagreements we find among those who call themselves Christians: Disagreements between churches of different denominations, disagreements between churches within the same denomination, disagreements between people within the same church. They range from disputes about when someone should be baptized, to how often you can take holy communion, what kinds of songs you should sing during service (if any), what you should wear, what you should eat, how you should read the Bible, how you should pray, etc. You get the idea.

We disagree over the ‘right’ way to do Christianity. Silly? I think so, as do many people I know, Christians and non-Christians alike. As the famous quote says,

In essentials, unity;

In non-essentials, liberty;

In all things, charity.

Yet if I’m honest with myself, I find that I take part in those arguments as well, if only internally. I’m always trying to look for the ‘right’ way, the ‘best’ way to do Christianity, to get close to God. I think that as humans we’re always looking for some sort of formula we can count on. You could argue that religion is that formula. It is a man-made system which we have devised to try to grasp the Divine. I know there are lots of heated debates and arguments out there about whether religion is good or not, whether Jesus is bigger than religion, etc., but I don’t want to get into the semantics of it. Here’s what we must remember: Jesus is the goal, not moral or spiritual or religious perfection. There is no method to get to Christ except to go to Him, humble and broken.

So instead of being critical of how others choose to pursue Christ, let’s remember that Christ is pursuing a relationship with each of us, individually. Every relationship is different. So let each do whatever is necessary for the stirring up of his or her soul to remember Christ, for He is the ultimate goal. If all our striving, in whatever form it may take, does not bring us to Christ, we’ve missed the point of religion.

Do what you need to do to get closer to Him who is calling out for you.
